Alcoholic beverages
Alcoholic beverages, including wines, spirits and beer is the first sector to work with electronic labels. This makes it possible to provide information on nutritional values and allergens to end users, which becomes mandatory for all alcoholic beverages sold on the territory of the European Union from the end of 2023. The requirements also apply to producers outside the European Union if they offer their products to the European market.
In March 2018, European wine and spirits producers submitted to the European Commission a proposal for self-regulation of the sector to ensure that the commitment, nutritional information and ingredient information on all alcohol products sold in the EU to be available to users.
In February 2019, the European Committee of Wine Producers in Europe /Comite Europeen des Entreprises Vinse/ and Spirit of Europe together with GS1 organizations in Europe launched an initiative to help companies standardize nutritional information and ways to make it available to consumers online.
A U-label platform has been developed that allows companies in the industry to create electronic labels in the form of a QR code. The platform includes a common data model, automatic translation, and a harmonized product identification method that allows connection between different databases to fill in the necessary data in the platform.
